Experimental Study on Effects of Korean Ginseng in Pneumococcal Endophtalmitis

Abstract
The experimental endophthalmtis was obtained by injection of about EO thousands of pn¡þeumcocci into the anterior chamber of the rabbit¢¥s eyes for the purpose of studying the effects of ginseng on acute bacterial infection.
Large doses of ginseng extract(150 mg/kg) and small doses of ginseng extract(25 mg/kg) were administrated intraperitoneally for 6 days on each group from 2nd day of infection.
The commparative observations were done for the effects of ginseng on pneumococcal endophthalmitis, and summarized as follows:
A. Clinically
1. The corneal stromal edema appeared to be significantly aggravated in small doses of ginseng administrated group than the others, and small doses of ginseng were thought to be harmfull than large doses of ginseng for endophthalmitis especially for cornea. . 2. In large doses of ginseng administrated group, corneal edema showed different two patterns; a half of aggravation and the other half of improvement.
3. Control group showed a little improvement and no remarkable change in corneal edema.
B. Histopathologically
1. Stromal edema and fibrosis of the cornea seemed to be more marked in small doses of ginseng administrated group than the others.
2. There was no remarkable difference between control group and large doses of ginseng administrated group, in the corneal changes.
3. Marked inflammatory changes were seen in not only iris or ciliary¡¯s body but also vitreous or optic nerve, in the cases of severe endophthalmitis.
